This month's issue includes information on penalty mitigation for environmental audits, National Battery Day, and the chemical glycidaldehyde.
This month's issue includes information on effective stop work authorization programs, hazard communication (HazCom) training, exemptions to HazCom Standard labeling requirements, and working safely around asbestos.
Employee News Articles:
Any employee who may be exposed to hazardous chemicals must be trained. The HazCom training should take place at the time of an employee’s initial assignment and whenever a new chemical hazard is introduced into the work area.
In any general industry or construction workplace, a stop work authorization policy allows workers (employees and contractors) to stop work if a task isn’t clear or if there are conditions that may cause harm, injury/illness, or damage. A good stop work authorization policy enhances a strong safety culture by allowing workers to raise any concerns for unsafe conditions at their facility without fear of reprisal.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication (HazCom) Standard, chemical-specific information must always be available through a written program that includes safety data sheets and label explanations. However, when a chemical or product is regulated by another agency, it might be exempt from labeling requirements.
Asbestos is a microscopic fiber that can stay in the air for hours and even days. Inhaling the fibers can damage your lungs and cause asbestosis and various forms of cancer. There’s no “safe” level of airborne asbestos exposure, so it’s important to know where asbestos is and avoid being exposed to it.
Test your knowledge about working safely with asbestos.
Final Rules:
OSHA has issued an interim final rule with regulations governing the anti-retaliation provisions of the Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2020 (AMLA or the Act).
Proposed Rules:
OWCP has issued a withdrawal of its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that proposed new procedures for assessing and adjudicating penalties under the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act (LHWCA).
White Papers:
The Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) collect and disseminate data on private sector workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. OSHA has developed and implemented electronic data submission systems, enabling it to release facility- or worksite-specific injury and illness information publicly.
Final Rules:
FMCSA has issued a correction, for a final rule published in the Federal Register on November 18, 2024, amending its regulations by making technical corrections throughout the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs).
Proposed Rules:
PHMSA has issued a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) titled ``Hazardous Materials: Advancing Safety of Highway, Rail, and Vessel Transportation (HM-265),'' proposing amendments to the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) to adopt several modal-specific amendments that would enhance the safe transportation of hazardous materials in commerce by highway, rail, and vessel transportation.
Notices:
OWCP has given notice of meetings of the Advisory Board on Toxic Substances and Worker Health (Advisory Board) for the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA).
Toolbox Talks:
