This topic covers the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), which apply to all employers, employees, and commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) that transport property or passengers in interstate commerce. The FMCSRs do not apply to certain cases, including public-sector activities, school bus operations, fire and rescue vehicles used in emergency response, and noncommercial transportation of personal property.
The FMCSRs include requirements for motor carrier identification, marking of CMVs, recordkeeping, financial responsibility, accident reporting, and employee safety and health standards. All motor carriers must make all records and information about accidents available to an authorized FMSCA representative.
