General Industry. This topic covers hazardous substances regulated under OSHA’s toxic and hazardous substances rules, such as acetylene, benzene, hexavalent chromium, vinyl chloride, and other substances under 1910.1002 to 1910.1096 not covered by their own topics (e.g., asbestos and lead) and not air contaminants (mold, silica, etc.). You’ll also find information here about storage and handling of OSHA hazardous materials such as liquefied petroleum gases and storage and handling of anhydrous ammonia. There is also training material for hazardous waste regulated under EPA.
Construction Industry. Toxic and hazardous substances in construction are regulated under 29 CFR 1926.55 (gases, vapors, fumes, dusts, and mists) and 29 CFR 1926 Subpart Z (toxic and hazardous substances). With the exception of stricter or more detailed construction requirements for asbestos, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium, the requirements of 1926 Subpart Z are an adoption of the general industry regulations under 1910 Subpart Z. The construction permissible exposure limits (PELs) for hazardous substances (29 CFR 1926.55, Appendix A) generally mirror the general industry PELs, except the construction PELs for certain hazardous dusts are stricter than the general industry PELs.
