National Summary

This topic covers Process Safety Management (PSM), which is OSHA’s rule for the regulation and management of highly hazardous chemicals to prevent or minimize employee exposure to the hazards associated with uncontrolled releases of these chemicals.

OSHA’s PSM rule (29 CFR 1910.119) applies to facilities using processes that involve highly hazardous chemicals with threshold values at or above those specified in Appendix A of the PSM rule, or flammable liquids or gas of 10,000 pounds or more. Affected industries include chemical production or use, fabricated metal products, natural gas liquids, farm product warehousing, electric, gas, and sanitary services, and wholesale trade. The PSM rule interacts closely with EPA's Risk Management Plan (RMP) requirements.
