Hand and Portable Power Tools
National Summary

This topic covers OSHA’s general industry regulations for the use of portable power tools and hand tools, such as knives, axes, chain saws, portable grinders, jacks, lawn mowers, and powered drills.

Hand tools are nonpowered or operate only through physical exertion by hand; portable power tools are tools that require a power source to operate. Every employer is responsible for the safe condition of portable power tools and other hand-held equipment used by employees, including tools and equipment furnished by employees. Most portable power tools must be guarded to prevent injury to the user.
