National Summary

This topic covers mechanical handling equipment that moves materials from one location to another. Common hazards of conveyors are unguarded nip points, falling objects, hazardous electrical and mechanical energy, and getting caught and drawn in to the conveyor path.

OSHA regulates conveyors specifically in its construction rule at 29 CFR 1926.555, and the general use of such equipment is regulated under general industry and contruction rules for lockout/tagout, machine guarding, signs, signals, and barricades, and under the General Duty Clause.

Elevated platforms located beside moving conveyors are regulated at 29 CFR 1910.23. Belt conveyors in pulp, paper, and paperboard industries are regulated under 29 CFR 1910.261, and sawmills under 1910.265.
