This topic overs cranes and derricks, rigging, signaling, hoisting, suspended personnel platforms, fall protection, and crane operator certification in construction work.

OSHA’s rules for cranes and derricks in construction apply to power-operated equipment when used in construction that can hoist, lower, and horizontally move a suspended load. The definition does not include helicopter cranes, which are covered in a separate rule.

Common causes of injuries associated with crane operations addressed in the OSHA rules are struck by load, electrocution, crushing during assembly/disassembly, failure of boom, crane tip-over, struck by cab/counterweight, and falls.
