Workplace violence is the number-two cause of work-related deaths, responsible for 17 percent of all fatal occupational injuries in 2016. Threats, assaults, bullying, and harrassment also constitute workplace violence, and workplace violence results in tens of thousands of nonfatal workplace injuries resulting in days away from work every year.

The following risk factors increase the risk of workplace violence:
Industries at high risk for workplace violence include health care, late-night retail, social services, and police and law enforcement. While federal OSHA does not have a specific standard for preventing workplace violence, it can cite employers that fail to take reasonable steps to protect their workers from violent incidents under the General Duty Clause of the OSH Act.
